Description
Cuzco school from the second half of the 17th century (Peru) The Christ of the earthquakes (El cristo de los tremblores) Oil on canvas with gold highlights and brocateado decoration (restorations) 139 x 119.8 cm Provenance : - Valery Taylor Gallery Denver, United States - CRN Auction Cambridge, United States, Sale of 9 January 2011, lot 33. - Private collection Deep River, Connecticut, 1960-2010 This statue represents the image of a statue venerated in one of the side chapels of Cuzco Cathedral, taken out in procession on Holy Tuesday. Spared by the earthquakes that traumatised the city in 1650, it was considered miraculous and took the name of Cristo de los Tremblores. Christ stands between the Virgin and Saint John, whose clothes are covered in brocateado. The flowers that adorn the base of the statue are also immortalised here. Devotion to Christ of the Tremblors is still very popular in Peru.B319
