Description
18th century Cuzco school
The Virgin at her Sewing Work, Saint Joseph the Carpenter and Jesus Sweeping
Oil on canvas mounted on panel (restorations)
91.8 x 62.3 cm After the Flight into Egypt, the Gospel of Matthew (2, 22-23) tells of the Holy Family settling in Nazareth. This is the beginning of what is known as Jesus' "hidden life". Little information is divulged in the canonical texts, but in the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, chapter 31, we read "And when Jesus was ten years old, he began to help Joseph in his work [...]". These unofficial accounts have served as iconographic sources for artists over the centuries. Here, the author sets the scene in a modest household, where Jesus helps Mary and Joseph in their daily lives. The model family is represented on this canvas. The Virgin is busy sewing under a red canopy. In the background, Joseph is working as a carpenter. Two putti in the upper left corner watch over them.
