Inscribed Bernabé de Ayala on a cartouche The Virgin of Cocharcas was a popular icon in 18th-century Peru. It is a miraculous statue preserved in Copacabana.
Seated on a canopied throne, she holds the infant Jesus in her left arm. In her right hand, the flowers she holds symbolise her high rank, underlined by the crown she wears.
In the middle of a village, this statue of the Virgin offers her protection to the population and becomes a huaca, meaning sacred object in Quechua.
