Description
18th century Cuzco school
The parents of Samson (prefiguring Christ) kneel before an altar sacrificing the head of an ox, surmounted by an angel, against a landscape of exotic birds
Oil on canvas
76 x 112 cm This iconography refers to a passage from the Book of Judges in the Old Testament (Judges 13:19-20). Prefiguring the birth of Christ, an angel appears and announces to an Israelite couple the birth of Samson, a son devoted to God. Thanking him, the couple sacrificed a kid as an offering to Yahweh.
The kid is often replaced by an ox's head in Christian iconography.
