1910s BROOCH WITH ROUND RUBY AND DIAMONDS It is adorned at the centre with a round ruby set against a row of old-cut diamonds of decreasing size. Chiselled platinum setting. (18K white gold pin). French craftsmanship. Gross weight: 6.51 g. Length: 7.3 cm. Ruby dimensions: 7.82 x 3.10 mm. Ruby weight: approximately 1.40 to 1.60 carats. Preliminary report by GEM Paris, in their opinion: origin Burma, Mogok region, unheated. MOGOK OR THE FORBIDDEN VALLEY Long known as the “Forbidden Valley”, Mogok remains one of the most legendary places in gemmology. Made famous by Joseph Kessel in his book *The Valley of Rubies*, it is renowned for having produced some of the world’s finest rubies. Whilst science has now explained the origin of their exceptional red colour, Mogok’s prestige remains undiminished.
