FRED SAMUEL: THE LEGACY OF A NAME From the moment he opened his boutique at 6 Rue Royale in 1936, Fred Samuel made his ambitions clear with his first business card, which introduced him as “the modern jewellery designer”. A visionary title, reflecting a house destined to make its mark on the history of jewellery. The address itself boasts an exceptional artistic heritage: it was here that Georges Fouquet had created one of the most remarkable Art Nouveau interiors, designed in collaboration with the great artist Alphonse Mucha. Conceived as a veritable showcase for the imagination, this ensemble was fortunately spared from destruction and can still be admired today at the Musée Carnavalet. It was under this auspicious star that the young Fred Samuel, from a family of jewellers based in Argentina, developed a new vision of jewellery design. With this ring from around 1955, combining citrines and diamonds, he skilfully illustrates one of the design languages that would define the house’s unique character: the interplay between precious and semi-precious stones, expressed through free-flowing and personal forms. This piece thus bears witness to a period when Fred Samuel was exploring modern, elegant and inventive jewellery, heralding the creative spirit that remains at the heart of the house.
