To my dear friend Henri Michaux,
this Marie who can offer him nothing but ‘the space outside’…
In friendly remembrance from Brassaï
Paris, 9 May 1949
Former companions in the Montparnasse bohemian scene, the two friends spent time together almost every day in the 1920s, shortly after they first met: the Hungarian-born painter and photographer Gyula Halász, known as Brassaï (1899–1984), recalled those lean years with humour: “We were both equally penniless, and we often found ourselves eating nothing but a dish of potatoes, cooked in secret on my landlady’s stove. But at that time, Michaux was passionate about yoga and never stopped extolling the benefits of fasting.” “The outer space” referred to by Brassaï in the preface naturally alludes to *L’Espace du dedans* (1944) by
Michaux – Brassaï being one of the very few photographers admitted by the poet.
The copy is in perfect condition.
