Description
Albert CAMUS. *The Rebel*. Paris, Gallimard, 1951. Included: *The Fall*, a novella. Paris, Gallimard, 1956. 2 in-12 volumes, paperback: grey paper slipcases. Two books by Camus presented to the novelist Dominique Aury, with autographed dedications: to Dominique Aury / with affectionate regards / from Albert Camus to Dominique Aury / his friend / Albert Camus It is an amusing coincidence that these books came from the novelist and publisher Dominique Aury (1907–1998), whose erotic novel, *Histoire d’O*, caused a scandal: it was published in 1954, between these two books by Albert Camus. She was also the secret lover of Jean Paulhan, the éminence grise of Gallimard, Camus’s publisher. The title page of *The Rebel* bears a note indicating the 25th edition. The press copy of *The Fall* bears a note on the title page indicating the second edition.
