Description
Gaston CHAISSAC. Letter with drawing to a friend. No place or date [Spring 1947?]. Autograph letter signed with an original signed drawing, 1 page in-4, in pencil on lined paper, drawing on the reverse (ring holes). A lovely letter, illustrated on the reverse with a large pencil drawing depicting a quasi-Cubist figure sporting an enormous beard, resembling a sort of large oval breastplate. As is often the case, Gaston Chaissac describes his daily life in Sainte-Florence-L’Oie, mentioning his neighbours and worrying that he might have caught a cold the previous evening at the cinema “where a film was showing with Bourvil in the role of a country man [*Pas si bête*, directed by André Berthomieu?]. Peasant common sense is a myth. […] I sowed a few more little peas [sic] before heading to the cinema in a doubly rural atmosphere.” The rainy weather may not be conducive to their germination. Finally, in the margin, Chaissac adds: “People are still making fun of me and using my name to amuse the crowd…” “Chaissac’s letters are wonderfully poetic; they are fables and hoaxes, jokes and genuine cries for help” (Yves Peyré).
