Antoine Coron notes Matisse’s disappointment upon receiving the book: “hence, no doubt, the small number of proofs signed by him.” (Coron, René Char, no. 145: “The most significant collection of the immediate post-war period.” – John Bidwell, *Graphic Passion. Matisse and the Book Arts*, 2016, no. 33.) The frontispiece is reprinted on the title page; the cover and spine are made of paper and have been reattached.
