Description
René CHAR. *Nous avons*. Paris, Louis Broder, 1959. Oblong 12mo, loose-leaf, illustrated cover, publisher’s slipcase in green silk decorated with an engraved woodcut. Partly original edition, printed in a run of 150 copies on pure rag vellum from the Andert mill, signed by the poet and the painter (no. 127). Joan Miró’s original illustrations comprise five colour etchings and aquatints, including one for the cover, and a wood engraving for the publisher’s slipcase. “No painter was more frequently associated with Char’s poems than Joan Mir […] They both enjoyed working together: Mir was a true reader of poetry, and in 1963 Char wrote his most elaborate text on art in relation to Mir’s painting. […] An initial version of *Nous avons*, in four fragments, had been printed by PAB in February 1958, featuring a celluloid engraving by Mir. At one point, there was talk of compiling *Testament de l’Aurore* with five other fragments; this work exists only in manuscript form. For this edition, Mira composed a brilliant series of engravings printed by Dutrou at Crommelynck. This is the last book by René Char published by Louis Broder” (Coron, René Char, BnF, 2007, p. 178). The publisher’s canvas slipcase is slightly worn.
