Description
René CHAR. *L’Effroi la Joie*. Paris, Jean Hugues, 1971. Large 8vo in loose sheets, cover with flaps, publisher’s slipcase in marbled paper. First illustrated edition. Limited edition of 90 numbered copies, plus a few companion copies, all on Auvergne paper, signed by the poet and the illustrator (no. 67). First print run: 14 original etchings by Joseph Sima, including a frontispiece and two full-page illustrations. “The deepest pessimism pervades the poems in this short collection, written between December 1968 and February 1969, published in a limited edition in May–June, then in *L’Éphémère* during the summer of 1969. The decision to produce a third, illustrated edition resulted from an agreement, the following summer, with Jean Hugues, concerning the two collections of poetry that René Char had just completed. Having greatly appreciated Sima’s drawings on the manuscript of *Nous tombons*, Char could only approve of the choice that allowed him to ‘encounter the landscape’ once more with the painter. In this book we find the expanses of light characteristic of Sima’s second creative period, but also the adjoining blocks, reminiscent of the ‘dead ends’ in his recent canvases or evoking certain older landscapes linked to the Jouvien period of his painting” (Antoine Coron, René Char, BnF, 2007, p. 198).
