Description
René CHAR. *Contre une maison sèche*. Paris, Jean Hugues, 1975 [1976]. Oblong folio, loose-leaf, hardback, with the publisher’s cover and slipcase in unbleached canvas. A fine book illustrated with 9 original full-page intaglio engravings by Wifredo Lam. T Limited edition of 175 copies on Rives vellum, signed by the painter and the poet (no. 123). “ All manner of delays hampered the production of this book: the artist’s distance, the need to commission a Milanese engraver, and the choice of a plate format that doubled the book’s originally planned size. René Char had to wait five years for the engravings, which he deemed ‘admirable’ when he saw them; he then came to love the book […]. Finally, the exhibition held at the Point Cardinal, Jean Hugues’s gallery, gave him the opportunity to write one of the most delightful essays he ever devoted to a painter – *From The Holy Family to The Right to Idleness*” (Antoine Coron).
