Description
Paul ÉLUARD. *Poésie et Vérité* 1942. Paris, Éditions de la Main à Plume, 1942 In-12, paperback, cloth-bound cover, with margins on all sides: preserved in a red half-maroquin slipcase with bands by J. Liekens. First edition. To circumvent the censors, the ‘printed’ date was given as 3 April 1942 – although the book was actually completed in September. One of 30 copies on grey Ronsard paper (no. 36), with all margins intact. First publication of ‘Liberté’, appearing at the head of a semi-clandestine pamphlet produced by a group of young Surrealists and Resistance fighters. With a lyricism reminiscent of song, easy to memorise and pass on by word of mouth, ‘Liberté’ embodied the quintessential model of contraband poetry. It was set to music by Francis Poulenc shortly after the war. (Literary Archives under the Occupation, p.: “Recklessly displayed in the window of the Gallimard bookshop on Boulevard Raspail, the booklet caught the attention of a German officer, who demanded its immediate removal.”)
