Description
[Max ERNST]. Max Ernst. Works from 1919 to 1936. Paris, Éditions des Cahiers d’Art, 1937. Folio, paperback, illustrated cover with a filled-in design, modern slipcase. First edition. A fine copy belonging to Francis Picabia, featuring a signed autograph dedication in the form of a pictorial riddle or rebus, adorned with an Indian ink drawing framing the title page: for ΠK Bia (Fr 6) Paris, Dec. 1938 Yours (?) in a Dadaist spirit. Max Ernst Relations between the two former Dadaists appear to have cooled following their shared adventure – although Picabia, notably through his magazine *391*, was one of the key figures in introducing Max Ernst to France. Whilst Ernst joined the Surrealist group after the break-up of Dada, Picabia was to pursue a more distinctive path, marked by a return to figurative painting. Small tears on the spine.
