Description
André FRÉNAUD. *Vieux Pays*. Followed by *Campagne*. Raoul Ubac. Paris, Maeght, 1967. Folio, loose-leaf, embossed hardback, publisher’s slipcase in wine-coloured cloth. First edition of *Vieux Pays*. *Campagne* had previously appeared in 1962 in the collection *Il n’y a pas de paradis*. Limited edition of 185 copies, signed by the poet and the painter, on Auvergne paper from the Richard de Bas mill (no. 64). The illustrations comprise 13 original full-page etchings by Raoul Ubac. The embossed cover is decorated with a small engraving. “Of the fifty or so books that Raoul Ubac illustrated over fifty years, ten were written by Frénaud. This speaks volumes about the close friendship that has bound the two men since the war and the magazine *Messages*. […] *Vieux Pays*, a poem about a mental landscape and the men who built it and lived there—our forefathers—stands out as one of the most powerful expressions of a certain classicism in the illustrated book” (Coron, 50 illustrated books since 1947, 1988, no. 37.) Cover discoloured.
