Description
GUILLEVIC. Les Murs. Original lithographs by Jean Dubuffet. Paris, Les Éditions du Livre, 1950. Large quarto, mounted on tabs, “rocker leather” (marbled grey sheepskin) with intaglio decoration in various shades of grey, black morocco linings, black suede endpapers, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Monique Mathieu, 2005). First edition: illustrated with 15 full-page original lithographs by Jean Dubuffet, including one on the cover. Limited edition of 172 copies: one of the 150 printed by Montval (no. 69). One of the great books of dialogue published in 1950, according to Yves Peyré: “Les Murs appeared […] after a long incubation period of five years. A strange bond of kinship links Guillevic and Dubuffet. The former’s poems possess an everyday lyricism; they expose false obviousness and capture the wisdom found on the streets […]. Consequently, Dubuffet threw himself wholeheartedly into this book, the most classical of his publications, although the poster-style typeface chosen […] runs counter to this tendency”. (Peyré, Peinture et Poésie, p. 148.- Coron, 50 illustrated books since 1947, 1988, no. 11.—The Artist and the Book, no. 88.—From Goya to Max Ernst, illustrated books from the R.M. Library, no. 62.) A superb decorative binding by Monique Mathieu, in perfect harmony with the book. Monique Mathieu told SP, who commissioned the binding, that she used leather typically used to make “hooligan jackets”, which she had found at the Saint-Ouen flea market. According to Louis Trochet, Mr Mathieu referred to this leather as “rocker leather”.
