Precious autographed dedication: to Henri Michaux, / with a discreet accompaniment / of calabash for the siesta of / the crocodiles… / G Henein / Cairo, March 1949 The son of a Coptic diplomat, Georges Henein (1914–1973) “was the man who introduced Surrealism to Egypt. […] Following Nasser’s rise to power [November 1954], he went into exile and joined *Jeune Afrique* as a journalist in Rome, before settling in Paris in 1966 […]. Through his dual cultural background—Arab-Eastern and Western—Henein was already very close to Michaux. But above all, a strange kinship of spirit united them. The few letters still available bear witness to this, as do Henein’s numerous articles on Michaux. Brief yet intense, these texts strike at the very heart of Michaux, his indomitable essence. […] The writer Georges Henein is also, without doubt, the man whose style most spontaneously resembles that of Michaux” (Michaux, Œuvres complètes II, Pléiade, p. 1232).
