Description
Henri MICHAUX. Bust portrait of a man. No place or date [circa 1934–1935]. Original two-tone watercolour on paper, signed (15.6 x 11.5 cm), framed. A beautiful original watercolour: on the reverse, it bears a precious autograph inscription: ‘To Paul Éluard, H. Michaux’. Paul Éluard occupies a special place in Michaux’s literary pantheon. He paid tribute to him on several occasions, notably in *L’Avenir de la poésie*, praising his poems as ‘dreamlike, and of the most delicate kind’. ‘Michaux always distinguished him from the Surrealists as a whole, particularly from Breton and Aragon. […] In a certain sense, Éluard seems to represent for Michaux the image of the poet—in part traditional—from whom he diverges, yet whose lyricism and sensitivity he respects. Exchanges of books between the two men bear witness to their mutual regard” (Michaux, Œuvres complètes I, Pléiade, p. 1382).
