First edition: one of the extremely rare six head copies on imperial Japanese paper (no. II). The first volume in the *Métamorphoses* collection edited by Jean Paulhan, the collection comprises 31 texts, as well as an introduction that has not been republished. The first work of imaginary travel writing influenced by Swift and Kafka. “The conception of *Voyage en Grande Garabagne* may well constitute the most tumultuous episode in Michaux’s literary life” (Raymond Bellour, *Michaux*, *Pléiade*, II, p. 1054).
