Henri MICHAUX. Untitled. [Circa 1937–1938]. Original gouache on a black background, signed (31 x 24 cm), framed. A superb original gouache on a black background, signed: on the reverse is a handwritten dedication signed ‘For Georgette Fourcade / a tribute from an old friend / H. Michaux’. It was featured in 1999 at the Henri Michaux exhibition at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (no. 74, with reproduction on p. 74), and subsequently in the exhibition ‘Henri Michaux & Zao Wou-Ki: In the Empire of Signs’ at the Martin Bodmer Foundation in Geneva in 2015 (no. 67, with a reproduction on p. 80 of the catalogue). “Michaux curiously paints on black backgrounds, pitch-black backgrounds. Black is his crystal ball. From black alone he sees life emerge. A life entirely invented” (Peintures).
