Description
[Henri MICHAUX]. Gisèle FREUND. Portrait of Henri Michaux. Undated [1939]. Original photograph, silver print (29.1 x 20.9 cm). A remarkable and famous portrait of Henri Michaux by Gisèle Freund: on the back of the mount is the photographer’s stamp bearing her address in Buenos Aires, where she was in exile. The photograph was taken in 1939. Faced with the rise of Nazism, the photographer was forced into exile and settled in Buenos Aires in 1941. Very skilful restoration work. The cardboard on which the image was mounted has been replaced: the original cardboard has been preserved, bearing the stamps: Foto Gisèle Freund, Tres Sargentos 436 / Buenos Aires. From the Skira collection (Geneva, Christie’s, 13 November 2000, lot 88).
