Description
Henri MICHAUX. Trees of the Tropics. Paris, Gallimard, [1942]. In-12, bottle-green Jansenist morocco, water-green morocco linings, edges gilt on endpapers, illustrated cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Mercher 1952). First edition. A small album of 18 line drawings of trees: Henri Michaux had produced them in Brazil and written a three-page introduction. The booklet was originally due to be published by Ballard as part of the *Cahiers du Sud* series, but was ultimately taken on by Gallimard, thanks to the intervention of Paulhan and Parisot. Such a work in the midst of the war was not a priority. One of 350 numbered copies on Héliona paper from Papeteries Navarre. Image 2. An original sepia-ink drawing, initialled (12.5 x 17.5 cm): a composition of exotic trees featured in the book. The spine of the binding is slightly faded.
