Description
Henri MICHAUX. A Pulley. [1942]. Original colour watercolour, signed (31.5 x 22.5 cm), framed. A superb original composition, first reproduced in 1946 in *Peintures et dessins*, no. 28, under the title *Un Palan* and accompanied by the following commentary: “The Palans provide the sabre-swallowers and the dust-suckers...” The watercolour is described as coming from the author’s collection, dated 1942. The caption is taken from *Voyages en grande Garabagne* (1936). It was first reproduced in the volume of *Poètes d’aujourd’hui* in 1969 (page 141). From the collection of [Geneviève] Bonnefoy. The watercolour subsequently belonged to Yoshihisa Tsuruoka, who had transformed his Tokyo flat into a ‘Michaux museum’. It was sold in Paris in 2009. A work entitled *Palan* was featured in the Henri Michaux exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi in 1971 (no. 17 in the catalogue, with reproduction), then in the exhibition at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana in Brussels in 2016 (p. 30 of the catalogue) and finally at the Wallonia-Brussels Centre in Paris in 2017.
