Description
Henri MICHAUX. Notes for an account of a journey to Poddema (The troubles they have with the people of Poddema over a drink). No place or date [1945]. Typewritten with numerous handwritten corrections, 8 pages in-4, numbered 18 to 25 and hand-renumbered from 1 to 8. Heavily corrected typescript, including around twenty lines written entirely in the author’s own hand, of this account of an imaginary journey to the land of the Poddema, tribes comprising several species, some of which are reared in ‘pots’! This is one of the four texts contained in *Ici, Poddema*, published by Mermod in Lausanne in 1946. These *Notes to Accompany an Account of a Journey to Poddema* were first published in the journal edited by Henri Parisot, *Les Quatre Vents*, no. 3, November 1945. Whilst actual journeys played a very significant role in his life, Michaux indulges here, with relish, in a form of fantastical ethnology, without judgement but with obvious delight as he describes the characteristics of the Poddemais or scenes of cannibalism.
