Description
Henri MICHAUX. Apparitions. Paris, Le Calligraphe, 1946. In-8, pine-green Jansenist calfskin, smooth spine, water-green grained reptile skin linings, cover and spine preserved, slipcase, dust jacket (Emmanuelle Cheney). First edition: illustrated with 7 full-page compositions by Henri Michaux. One of 310 copies printed on white Marais vellum (no. 9). Autograph dedication on the half-title page: ‘To Jacques Prévert, who, I hope, is no longer in limbo. With friendship, H. Michaux’. Distinguished provenance: Michaux held the poet of *Paroles* in high esteem. Jacques Prévert’s first collection had been published shortly before *Apparitions*, in December 1945, by the same publisher, René Bertelé. It had been a phenomenal success, making its author famous overnight. Furthermore, in the chronology of Michaux’s *Complete Works* in the *Pléiade* series (I, p. CXI), Raymond Bellour and Ysé Tran report that Danièle Gasiglia-Laster, in an article in *Magazine littéraire* in 1997, recalled that “Prévert liked to say that it was to please Henri Michaux that he had continued to write” and that, according to Maurice Saillet, it was Michaux who had persuaded Bertelé to compile Prévert’s texts. A remarkable and understated binding by Emmanuelle Cheney.
