Description
Henri MICHAUX. *Nous deux encore*. 1948. Paris, J. Lambert & Cie [Jacques-Olivier Fourcade], 1948. In-12, black half-box binding, covers inlaid with four black-stained wooden triangles and a red inlaid rectangle in the centre, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (Miguet). First edition published by his collaborator Jacques-Olivier Fourcade under the pseudonym J. Lambert & Cie. Printed in a run of 750 copies on Marais Crèvecœur vellum, including 100 non-commercial copies (no. 81). A memorial volume for Marie-Louise, the wife of Henri Michaux, who died in February 1948 following a domestic accident that had left her with excruciating burns. The book was printed in a limited number of copies, before its author, seized by remorse at what suddenly struck him as an inappropriate confession, attempted to buy back the copies in circulation. “A song of death and love” (Jean-Pierre Martin). A moving autograph dedication signed on the half-title page: André Gide, To help you recall a few moments of the one who admired you so much. A friendly tribute from H Michaux André Gide is the author of *Découvrons Henri Michaux*, a seminal text published in July 1941 by Gallimard, in which he set out to shed light on the poet, who was still little known to the public. This text is based on a lecture he was due to deliver in Nice on 21 May 1941, but which the French Legion of War Veterans prevented him from giving. In 1995, in an article entitled *Gide, Reader of Michaux*, Jean-Pierre Martin noted that only two letters written by Henri Michaux to André Gide are known to exist. The second, dating from late 1947, is a postcard sent in reply to a note of condolence from Gide following the death of Marie-Louise. A perfect copy. From the Bernard Loliée collection, with bookplate (2019, no. 47). (Imbert, no. 149.—BnF, Henri Michaux, 1999, no. 102: “This text, written for a few friends under a pseudonym, intrigued bibliophiles, who long wondered about the identity of the mysterious publisher. Michaux’s wish for anonymity was only breached upon his death. The booklet then became the subject of several pirated editions.”)
