Description
Henri MICHAUX. Cas de folie circulaire. New York, 1952.
In-8, raspberry-coloured calfskin decorated with a relief design, comprising, on the upper cover, square mosaic pieces set against a marbled background of acrylic paste in the same shade, forming a semicircle, a black calfskin panel in the centre, three horizontal bands of calfskin of the same shade on a marbled acrylic paste background, bordered by two incisions on black backgrounds in the centre of the covers; endpapers and linings in black suede, untrimmed; cover and spine preserved; box (Nobuko Kiyomiya 2009)
A rare first edition, published ‘at the expense and for the pleasure of a few admirers of Michaux, who is unaware of it’.
Michaux’s first signed text, inspired by his reading of *Les Chants de Maldoror*, appeared in the journal *Le Disque vert* in September 1922. (Michaux, *Œuvres complètes I*, Pléiade, pp. 998–1008.) Limited edition of just 20 copies on Holland paper (no. 14).
The booklet is housed in a beautiful binding by Nobuko Kiyomiya.
(Imbert, no. 168: “This volume, comprising all the texts that appeared in *Le Disque vert*, was published without Michaux’s consent by the Brussels bookseller José David and the painter Richard Lucas. The printing was entrusted to Henri Kumps, who also worked for the Belgian Surrealists and the Cobra group.”)
