Description
Henri MICHAUX. Paix dans les brisements. Paris, Flinker, 1959. Vertical quarto, tab-bound, black box decorated on the covers with a pattern of silver-coloured metal strips, inlaid with painted studs and red dots, a mosaic decoration of embossed pleated metallic leather, black box linings, pearl-grey suede endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine intact, preserved in a black calfskin box (Monique Mathieu, 2007). First edition: illustrated with a series of the author’s mescaline-inspired drawings reproduced over fourteen pages. Limited edition of 1,190 copies. “Michaux, in this tall, vertical book—erected to better fall, unravelling, flowing—where everything is a flow, or more accurately a ‘torrent’—offers a multitude of thoughts and sensations that assail him […]. Mescaline is there, drawing consciousness towards a super-consciousness, an accelerated state. […] Michaux has crafted a book that is perfect in its visual composition, form and typography. *Paix dans les brisements* is a great book of dialogue” (Yves Peyré). One of the first nine copies printed on Imperial Japan paper (no. 4), accompanied by an original drawing: it was printed especially for Maia Calliga, with this autographed dedication signed beneath the colophon: … if only peace could be distributed Henri Michaux The large original Mescalinian drawing, in ink and signed, is one of the fourteen drawings reproduced in the book. The copy is housed in an ingenious box designed to preserve the original drawing, protected by a Plexiglas window in the top flap. This is the only binding created by Mr Mathieu for this edition. (Peyré, *Peinture et poésie*, pp. 156–157. – Imbert, no. 210.)
