First editions. The first volume was published in the L’Age d’or series edited by Henri Parisot, with a full-colour cover illustrated by Mario Passinos. A single print run of 1,000 copies was produced by Ghaldwill for the second volume, which is unnumbered. (Vignes, Bibliographie des éditions de Minuit, no. 61, for *Seven New Famous Cases*.) Precious autographed dedications: signed modestly, ‘To Madame / Dominique Aury / MAAST’. ‘As soon as Justice had / made its appearance in the world, a great /= Injustice / appeared.’ / (Lao-Tzu) / For Dominique Aury / 20 June ’47, with friendship / Jean P. A most intriguing provenance, that of Dominique Aury, Jean Paulhan’s secret lover, another influential figure at Gallimard and soon to be the author, under the pseudonym Pauline Réage, of *Histoire d’O*, which would be published by Jean-Jacques Pauvert a few years after these two instalments of *Causes célèbres*, with the success we all know – a literary success as much as a scandal.
