Writer and psychoanalyst Jean-Bertrand Pontalis (1924–2013) was one of the leading figures at *Les Temps modernes*. Above all, from 1971 onwards – ten years before the publication of *La Clôture et autres poèmes* – he was Georges Perec’s psychoanalyst.
Perec “wrote *Les Lieux d’une ruse* in 1977, a short text of about a dozen pages on his analysis. […] What makes this analysis an extraordinary story is that Pontalis wrote nine texts – nine! – in which he discussed the Perec case in fairly straightforward terms” (Claude Burgelin, *Georges Perec*, p. 200).
