Description
Jacques PRÉVERT. *Letter from the Baladar Islands*. Illustrations by André François. Paris, Le Point du Jour, 1952. Oblong 8vo, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, modern slipcase. First edition, of which no large-format copies were printed. A fine copy from the publisher René Bertelé, with a handwritten dedication by Prévert on the cover. The inside front cover is adorned with a beautiful drawing by André François, signed in blue ink, and on the facing endpaper, an original collage by Prévert with a signed autograph dedication: to René of Le Point du Jour / his / friend / Jacques of the Gates of the Night René Bertelé boasts superb provenance; he was the publisher who became the friend to whom Jacques Prévert owed his success, thanks to the publication of *Paroles* in December 1945. Overnight, the poet went from being unknown to someone everyone was reading. (René Bertelé Collection Auction, 1997, lot 286.)
