Description
Arthur RIMBAUD. A Season in Hell. Brussels, Alliance typographique (M.-J. Poot et Compagnie), 1873. In-12, paperback, cover printed in red and black, blue half-maroquin slipcase, case. First edition, printed in a run of approximately 500 copies. Printed at the author’s own expense, it was not made available for sale. The only work published by the poet himself during his lifetime, the collection stands as a spiritual testament and a synthesis of his poetic experience. As the poet failed to settle his debt with the printer, he had only about ten copies at his disposal, which he gave to his close friends. The printer retained the remaining stock, which was unearthed in 1901 by a Belgian bibliophile, Léon Losseau: “A number of copies, damaged by water that had seeped through the roof, were thrown into the large stove in the workshop, and I paid for and had the remaining 425 sent to me.” (National Library, *En français dans le texte*, 1990, no. 299).
