Description
Jean-Paul SARTRE. Visages. Preceded by Portraits officiels. With 4 drypoint engravings by Wols.
Paris, Seghers, 1948.
In-12, paperback, cloth-bound cover. First edition. Both texts first appeared in the journal *Verve* in 1939, in issues 5 and 6.
Limited edition of 925 copies: one of the 900 printed at Crèvecœur du Marais (no. 77).
The illustration comprises four original full-page drypoint engravings by Wols.
“Wols’s artistic career was exceptionally brief, lasting barely six years, from his return to Paris in 1945 until his death in 1951 at the age of thirty-eight. In a long and beautiful study published in 1963, Jean-Paul Sartre notes that this painter, who was his friend, strove to see the world through inhuman eyes: this, he believes, is the only way to universalise our experience” (Antoine Coron, 50 Illustrated Books since 1947, 1988, no. 3.)
