Description
Jean-Paul SARTRE. *Nourritures*, followed by extracts from *Nausea*. Drypoint engravings by Wols.
Paris, Jacques Damase, 1949.
In-12, paperback, filled cover, with the title printed on a rectangle of paper mounted on the front cover.
Partly original edition.
Limited print run of 450 copies on pure-fibre paper from Papeteries Johannot (no. 413).
The book includes three drypoint engravings by Wols, not part of the main text.
During the war, from 1942 to 1945, Wols had been taken in by Henri-Pierre Roché at his home in Dieulefit. On his return to Paris in 1945, his work was exhibited at the René Drouin gallery, but he found himself in a most precarious situation. He met Sartre that same year; Sartre supported him financially and, according to Simone de Beauvoir, even rented him a room at the Hôtel des Saints-Pères. “Sartre was one of the first to recognise Wols’s genius, marvelling at his work, which he compared to what he had seen in the United States. As early as 1946, he asked him to illustrate his texts with engravings” (Michel Sicard in *Sartre*, Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2005, p. 212). Spine worn.
