Description
Pierre SEGHERS. L’Homme du commun ou Jean Dubuffet. With two original lithographs by
J. Dubuffet. Paris, Éditions Poésie (printed by Mourlot frères), 1944. Large 8vo, paperback, illustrated cover with a gilded border, modern slipcase.
First edition: a major monograph devoted to the painter, dedicated to Jean Paulhan. Limited edition of 161 copies; one of the 140 printed on Arches paper (no. 29).
Two original lithographs by Jean Dubuffet, one on the cover and one, in colour, as a frontispiece. They are dated and signed on the plate in September 1944.
One of the first three books illustrated with original lithographs by Jean Dubuffet. Indeed, that same year, Dubuffet illustrated *Quelques mots rassemblés pour Monsieur Dubuffet* by Paul Éluard and *Vache bleue dans une ville* by André Frénaud (published by Pierre Seghers), each featuring a lithograph. The year 1944 was also marked by the fierce controversies sparked by the painter’s first exhibition at the René Drouin gallery.
Some ink transfer on the frontispiece lithograph; marginal pinholes in places.
