Description
[Joseph SIMA]. In the Time of Jesus Christ. Czechoslovak folk tales translated into French by Louise-Denise Germain. Preface by Charles Vildrac. Woodcuts by Joseph Sima. Paris, printed by Kauffmann, 1932. Large 8vo, black half-maroquin with bands, smooth spine, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved. First French edition: illustrated with 10 full-page woodcuts in black by Joseph Sima. Limited edition of 350 copies: one of the 50 head copies on old Japanese paper, enhanced with a set of the woodcuts in their first state (no. XVI). From 1922 onwards, the fashion designer and bookbinder Louise-Denise Germain (1870–1936) collaborated with her future son-in-law, the painter Joseph Sima, on the production of the book, selecting the tales and translating them. Sima had arrived in France in 1921: he married Mrs Germain’s daughter in 1923. A fine copy. The spine of the cover is worn. (Le Bars, Louise-Denise Germain, bookbindings, BnF, 2017, pp. 12 and 33.)
