Description
Ubac. Paris, Maeght (Derrière le Miroir), 1961. Large quarto, loose-leaf, illustrated cover, publisher’s slipcase bearing the title *Ardoises taillées*. Special issue of the journal *Derrière le Miroir* devoted to the painter Raoul Ubac. With contributions by Francis Ponge (*L’Ardoise*) and Pierre Volboudt (*Stèles*). The illustrations comprise three original colour lithographs by Ubac: two on the cover and one spread across two pages. One of 150 copies printed on Rives vellum, signed by the painter (this one unnumbered), the only one on large-format paper. A unique copy presented to the painter Jean Bazaine and enhanced with two large, original full-page drawings, signed and dated 6 June 1962, with the inscription “For Catherine and Jean, Affectionately, R. Ubac.” An abstract painter and a leading figure of the New School of Paris, Jean Bazaine was a close friend of Raoul Ubac. His wife, Catherine de Seynes (1930–2012), was a committed actress and theatre director. The letter to the Bazaines is dated 29 June.
