HERMES PARIS. A rare printed jacquard silk twill square, titled ‘Kenya’: in shades of brown and khaki green on a cream background, with a wide black border. A distinctive feature of this square is the ‘jacquard silk’, woven with a delicate tone-on-tone leopard print. The design captures the majesty of the African savannah: a lion and a lioness in the centre, flanked by a graceful herd of antelopes, with leopards and cheetahs lurking in the corners. Signed by Robert Dallet. Small stains and loose threads. 89 x 88 cm. This carré is particularly interesting as it is also the very first silk carré created by the renowned wildlife artist Robert Dallet in 1988, following his meeting with Jean-Louis Dumas, then president of the House of Hermès. A naturalist and wildlife painter, Dallet is one of the most iconic artists in the history of Hermès. He devoted his life to the study of wildlife, and ‘Kenya’ is one of his very first masterpieces for the house, marking the start of a long series of scarves dedicated to wildlife and big cats. A brief history of jacquard silk: Hermès jacquard silk scarves are characterised by a pattern woven directly into the fabric, which complements the printed design. Due to very high production costs, Hermès ceased regular production in the early 2000s (around 2001/2002), making them highly sought-after vintage items amongst collectors today. What is jacquard at Hermès? Unlike classic silk twill (which is smooth), jacquard uses a specific weaving technique: a subtle relief pattern. Even before the scarf is screen-printed with its colours, the raw silk is woven in such a way as to reveal a textured, watermark-like pattern. Hermès’ jacquard textures often feature the brand’s symbols: bees, bells, fireworks, stars, fleurs-de-lis or equestrian motifs (bits, stirrups) or, as here, the leopard print. When the scarf moves, the light catches the weave differently, revealing the shiny or matt details woven into the silk.
