CHANEL Pre-Fall 2013 Ready-to-Wear Collection by Karl Lagerfeld: A magnificent rigid cuff bracelet in glossy black resin, adorned on the front with a Greek cross set with beige and brown glass paste cabochons, centred with a floral motif in imitation pearls, and featuring the Chanel double CC logo in silver-coloured metal on the reverse. Brushed silver-coloured metal clasp bearing the logo. Signed and dated on an oval plaque. "S" for Sales. Width 5.3 cm, internal diameter approx. 5.5 cm. Very good condition, slight marks on the clasp and some dirt on the inside. The Greek cross is recognisable by its four arms of equal length. This bracelet combines the modernity of a contemporary black resin cuff with the iconic Byzantine motifs and style favoured by Coco Chanel and Robert Goossens: the Greek cross, cabochons set with glass paste, and twisted metal in a curb or rope pattern. The significance of Byzantine art to Coco Chanel: Devastated by the death of her former lover Boy Capel in 1920, Coco Chanel set off to discover Venice. There she discovered the mosaics of St Mark’s Basilica and the treasures of Byzantine art, with its crosses and coloured stones, which she would soon incorporate into the aesthetic and artistic repertoire of her designs.
