(*)HERMES-MOVADO. “Ermetophon” travel watch with alarm function: vintage, in gold-plated metal and leather. Signed ‘Movado’ and ‘Hermès’ on the dial. This is a travel watch featuring an alarm function and a built-in leather-lined case. Silver-coloured dial with hour markers, hour and minute hands, and a red-tipped hand for the alarm. Two crowns: one for setting the time, the other for setting the alarm. A small folding stand on the back allows it to be placed upright. A ring also allows a chain to be attached if required. Mechanical movement, Calibre 901 based on AS 1475. Case serial number 70.981, circa 1970. 5.5 x 4 cm when closed, 8 x 4 cm when open. In good overall condition. No presentation box or papers. Ingenious mechanism + alarm complication: Ermetophon – The name ‘Ermeto’ comes from the Greek ‘hermetos’, meaning ‘sealed’ or ‘hermetic’, highlighting the exceptional protection offered by its sliding case. Its originality lies in its opening mechanism: by sliding the two case flaps apart to read the time, you activate a rack-and-pinion winding system. Each time the case is opened and closed, the power reserve is recharged. Movado manufactured the mechanism and the patented technical case. Hermès customised and covered the outer flaps with its iconic leathers (pigskin, crocodile, lizard, box calf) and stamped its ‘Hermès’ signature on the dial to sell it in its boutique on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. -The word ‘Phon’ means ‘voice’, ‘sound’ or ‘noise’ in Greek; it refers to the alarm function built into the watch.
