HERMES Paris. Printed silk twill carré entitled ‘Coup de Fouet’: designed by F Manlik, in shades of range, grey and beige, with a wide black border. Label. 88 x 89 cm. Small stains. Hermès box. A modern interpretation of Hermès’ equestrian heritage, focusing on movement and the lightness of line by Florence Manlik, one of Hermès’ leading illustrators and designers since the 2010s. The name ‘Coup de Fouet’ refers to the swift and precise movement of the leather strap, but the design goes far beyond the functional object. Four stylised horse heads occupy the corners of the composition, linked by sinuous, interlaced lines. Florence Manlik uses the leather straps and the whip to draw loops, knots and arabesques. The lines resemble ink calligraphy or wire drawings. The composition plays on blocks of bright colours that outline the structure of the horses and give depth to the intertwining strands of the whip. Published in 2013.
