HERMES Paris. Exceptional “Parures de Samouraïs” square: in printed silk twill, featuring a print in shades of coral and turquoise. Signed A. Honoré. Label. From the Spring–Summer 2017 collection; no reissue. In perfect condition. Hermès box. 87 x 89 cm. A rare, spectacular and highly sought-after square scarf. The design draws direct inspiration from 14 elements of samurai warriors’ armour dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Centre: A complete suit of armour in bronze, iron, gold, leather, silk and lacquer, attributed to a daimyō (feudal lord) and crafted by armourers from the Myochin school. Surrounding it: Ornaments, helmets, masks, floral motifs and clan crests. These authentic pieces belong to the collection of the Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum in Dallas (United States), one of the world’s largest collections of samurai armour. A record-breaking level of colour complexity: whilst a classic Hermès carré uses on average between 25 and 30 colours (which is already a huge number), ‘Parures de Samouraïs’ pushes the technique to its absolute limits by using nearly 45 to 47 colours. Twelve different colour variations were released upon its initial launch in the 90 cm format (each featuring its own unique combination of over 40 shades). It was whilst visiting Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller’s private collection in Dallas – one of the world’s largest collections of samurai armour outside Japan – that Aline Honoré fell in love with it at first sight. The lacquered armour at the centre of the square scarf is not an artistic invention: it is an exact reproduction of a masterpiece from the famous Myochin school of armourers dating from the Edo period (17th?–18th? century), held in Dallas. The design was released in 2018 as a shawl (cashmere and silk). There has been no reissue of the square scarf. No spin-offs: the house has never produced it in more recent formats (Wash, Twilly, Carré 70 or men’s sizes). The limited number of pieces, the technical complexity, its beauty and its condition make it particularly interesting.
