HERMES Paris. Printed silk twill carré, titled ‘La rose des Vents’: signed J.METZ (Joachim Metz), in shades of brown, coral, purple and orange, with a brown border. Label. Very good condition. The design is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional compass rose used by sailors. The large central geometric star points towards the cardinal and intercardinal directions, each designated by the name of a historic wind (such as the Mistral, the Sirocco, the Tramontane, the Blizzard or the Zephyr, which can be read on the circular bands). In each corner is a medallion in the shape of a stylised star framing the name of a cardinal point (North, South, East, West). First published in 1984, reprinted in 2012.
