Description
OFFICIAL INSIGNIA Council of the Five Hundred, identity medal of the Year V type by Gatteaux, octagonal in silver; on the obverse, a lictor’s fasces surmounted by a laurelled Phrygian cap, framed by oak and laurel branches in front of two cornucopias, with the inscription ‘RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’ and the exergue ‘REPRES. DU PEUPL'AN V.”; on the reverse, a serpent biting its tail encircles the tablets of the Law inscribed “CONSTITUTION DE L'AN III”, in front of a spirit level, with the circumscription “CONSEIL DES CINQ-CENTS”, engraved in italics at the exergue ‘F.A. BOISSY’, surmounted by an ornate transverse bail. Beautiful patina. 44 mm France, late 18th century. Very good condition Provenance: Paul Démogé collection, Part 2, 28 April 2021, 150 Beaussant-Lefèvre, Drouot, lot 379. François, Antoine de Boissy d'Anglas (1756–1826), lawyer, deputy for the Third Estate of the Annonay district at the Estates General of 1789, deputy for the Ardèche in the National Constituent Assembly and then the National Convention from 1792 to 1795 (Girondins), and in the Council of Five Hundred from 1795 to 1797. He was appointed to the Tribunate in 1801, then a member of the Conservative Senate in 1804, and a Peer of France in 1814. Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and Count of the Empire.
