Description
Freemasonry – Sweden – Embroidered badge of a Masonic chapter or lodge, in the shape of an eight-pointed cross, the arms covered with silver-edged blades of six short rays in gold thread, centre edged with gold sequins, highly domed in sky-blue silk embroidered with the letters C. J: (Charles Jean) beneath a royal crown and above the date 5/12 1814, the reverse covered in white paper (creases at the tips, small losses).
94 mm
Sweden, early 19th century. Very good to very good condition
The initials CJ refer to Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1763–1844), Marshal of the Empire, adopted by King Charles XIII of Sweden. He was crowned King of the Union of the Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway in 1818, under the name Charles XIV John. Inspired by that of the Knights of the Order of the Seraphim, this plaque is undoubtedly that of a Masonic chapter presided over by the new king.
