Old restorations
Louis Borély was born into a Provençal family. He made a career as a trader in Alexandria, and founded the trading house "Jullien Despeignes et compagnie" in Cairo. He was also an advisor and secretary to the King at the Chambre des Comptes. In the 18th century, the Borély family was one of the most prestigious and wealthy families in Marseille.
On his return from Egypt in 1767, Louis Borély undertook the construction of Château Borély, calling on the services of
architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau (1721-1820). He did not see the project through to completion, but it was taken over by his son Louis-Joseph Denis (1731-1784), a man of letters and art lover who was appointed to the Académie de Marseille in 1765.
