Description
A pair of silver-plated bronze torches after a design by Juste-Aurèle MEISSONNIER. The base has contours decorated with acanthus leaves, shells, clasps and canals. The shaft is decorated with scrolls and three cartouches adorned with attributes. The foot is supported by small putti. (Wear) Height : 30 cm Model after the torches created by Juste-Aurèle MEISSONNIER for Louis XV and kept in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (inv. 332A/B). The model for these torches is thought to have been designed by Meissonnier for the birth of the Dauphin in 1729. Probably French work from the second half of the 19th century. Juste-Aurèle MEISSONNIER (1695-1750) was one of the major figures in the emergence of the rocaille style in France. The son of a silversmith from Aix-en-Provence who had settled in Turin, he moved to Paris around 1715 and led a career marked by remarkable artistic versatility. Medal engraver, chiseller, goldsmith, sculptor, draughtsman, decorator and architect, in 1726 he was appointed draughtsman to the King's Chamber and Cabinet, a position that gave him official recognition. An inventor of form above all, Meissonnier developed an innovative ornamental vocabulary, based on asymmetry, movement and fantasy, which made a decisive contribution to the affirmation of the Rococo taste in Paris in the 1730s. His models were widely disseminated through engraving, particularly within the OEuvre de Meissonnier, and exerted a lasting influence on the decorative arts, although their physical execution was more often than not entrusted to other craftsmen working under his control.
