AWARDED TO BREITLING.
Steel chronograph wristwatch, white enamel dial, black minute track, black decals for Arabic numeral hour markers, the number 12 in red, small seconds at nine o’clock, 30-minute chronograph counter at three o’clock, blued pear-shaped hands, central chronograph hand. ‘Wire’ lugs. At two o’clock on the case, an ‘olive’-coloured push-button for start, stop and reset. Hinged steel case back, numbered 142316. Hand-wound mechanical chronograph movement, engraved with an ‘M’ for metal, featuring an anchor escapement and column wheel. The watch and chronograph were in working order at the time of appraisal; however, there is no guarantee of future operation or the condition of the components.Scratches on the case; a few slight cracks and marks on the dial. Circa 1915. Diameter 36 mm
This is a very interesting piece from the perspective of 20th-century watchmaking history, as it is believed to be one of the very first chronograph wristwatches in history, most likely produced by Breitling, given that – in light of the very few surviving examples and period brochures – the dial, case, engravings and movement are consistent.
