A pupil of the painter François Diday (1802–1877), Amédée Daudit was, as Jean-Roger Soubiran notes, one of the three leading figures of the “Bordeaux Trinity” alongside Martin Léonce Chabry (1832–1882) and Louis-Auguste Auguin (1824–1903). A rival of the latter, Daudit devoted himself to painting landscapes that ‘come alive’ and are influenced by the great masters of the Barbizon School.
Between 1870 and 1886, the artist devoted himself to creating a “stormy series” painted around Lacanau. Drawing on the teachings of his master, Baudit attached great importance to the solitude of the subjects he depicted. Conversely, in his large-scale works, he conveys a vivid emotion in the face of nature’s fury, presenting a natural and realistic vision – unlike Auguin – of the living conditions of the inhabitants of southern Gironde and the Landes.
